Menopause Symptoms at Work: What Helps

Many people go through perimenopause and menopause at the height of their careers. For some, symptoms barely register; for others, hot flashes, poor sleep, brain fog and mood changes make work harder.

In 2024, The Menopause Society published consensus recommendations on menopause and the workplace. They describe how symptoms are linked to a reduced ability to work, lower productivity, time off work, and even job loss or leaving the workforce early. They call on employers to review policies and health benefits and to consider flexibility and adjustments, and they encourage women to know their resources and to speak up for what they need.

Quick answers

What kinds of adjustments can help?

Common examples include a fan or a cooler place to work, some flexibility after a bad night, breathable uniforms, easy access to toilets and drinking water, and short breaks when needed. What helps depends on the job and on your symptoms.

Do I have to tell my employer?

Generally, no. It is your choice what you share and with whom. Some people talk to a manager, HR or occupational health; others simply ask for a specific change. Rules and protections differ from country to country.

Can treatment help at work?

Treating bothersome symptoms, whether with hormone therapy, non-hormonal options or cognitive behavioral therapy, may make work easier too. These are decisions to make with your clinician.

When to talk to a clinician

  • Symptoms are affecting your concentration, attendance or performance.
  • You are sleeping badly most nights.
  • Low mood or anxiety is affecting your work or your life.

How logging helps

A few weeks of notes on hot flashes and sleep can show which days are hardest and help you explain what you need, to a clinician or, if you choose, to your employer. Pausa keeps the notes on your iPhone and in its own backup, never on a Pausa server; nothing is shared unless you share it.
